Strings Program Informational Letter
Signal Mountain Middle and High School Strings
February 4, 2010
Dear Parents and Students:
Thank you to all that have signed up, we are eager to get our Strings and Orchestra Program started Based on the sign-up sheets we will offer two levels of classes, Beginner (class 1) and novice/intermediate (class 2).  Class 1 will be for students who are just starting, class 2 will be for students who are either currently playing or starting over. Both classes with use the same method book, Essential Elements 2000 for Strings book 1. We will start our first meeting with Class two on February 16th from 2:30-3:45 in the Band Room then follow our regular schedule below.

Our tentative schedule:  beginning on February 16th.
Class one, beginners: every Monday and Wednesday from 2:30-3:45/4:00
Class two, intermediate: every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30-3:45/4:00
This schedule will probably undergo a few changes given that many students (and parents!) have busy schedules, this at least gives us a starting point. Students are expected to attend regularly, but there will be some degree of flexibility.  If there are any conflicts please let me know and I will do what I can to work with you.

Students will need to have an instrument, bow, case and method book. There are several stores in town that you may wish to contact for either rental or purchase. If you already have an instrument I highly recommend that you have your instrument checked by a qualified string instrument repair person before we start after school rehearsals.  Please have all needed supplies in hand or ordered by February 16th. Here is a list of music stores that offer rental, purchase or repair of string instruments:

Mountain Music                      Giant Steps
3304 Dayton Boulevard                    3841 Hixson Pike
Red Bank, TN 37415-4635                Chattanooga, TN 37415-3580
(423) 875-5250                        (423) 875-4179

If you choose to use a different store please make sure that they are knowledgeable about string instruments.  Any good store will measure the distance from the student’s neck to palm to help fit them to the right sized instrument.  You should expect the instrument, case, bow, and rosin to come as a packaged deal in most places.  Many times it is cheaper to buy the instrument than to commit to endless rental agreements, if you have any question please do not hesitate to contact me. Next week I will be out of town but if you have any questions please contact via email at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Sincerely,  Jason W. Royal
