The student council is an important part of the school and its governance. Each year, representatives will either be elected by their peers or chosen by the faculty. Additionally, there are offices for which any student in the high school can run.
Meetings are held regularly.

In September of 2007, Principal Gravitte created a group comprised of students to advise him on policies like the dress code, schedule, some design questions, and the student handbook. This group of students is also charged with offering viable ideas that will enhance the student's experience of SMMHS.
