Fine Arts

The Art curriculum is designed to provide the kind of training which will enlighten and promote the creative process in the works of students who pursue the courses offered.

Visual Arts - Grades 6-8

Teacher: Betsy McClain

Students will learn about art though themes such as Animals in Art, Food in Art, etc.  Students will be introduced to painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and photography.  Students are required to keep a sketch book.  In the book they will focus on creating designs for each project.  Various artists, art styles, and art history will be studied at the beginning of each project.

Band - Grades 6-8

Teacher: Robert Cirlot
Band is a year-long course that does not require previous experience for 6th graders.  Previous band participation is a pre-requisite for 7th and 8th grade students.   During the 2007-08 year approximately 175 students in grades six, seven, and eight participated in the band with almost half of the 6th grade class participating. Band typically begins in the summer during a two-week program for 6th grade students where they are introduced to instruments, make their instrument selections, and get instructions for the fall.  An extended summer band program is held for seventh and eighth grade students.  The bands hold two major concerts each year, one in December and one in May.  Other opportunities include performances at the Signal Mountain elementary schools for 6th graders, and traveling performances for seventh and eighth grade students.  Students are encouraged to try out for the District and All County Honor Band clinics, an honor that was extended to 38 SMMS students during the 2007-08 school year. Band at SMMS is an excellent program and we expect it to continue with the same high quality at the new SMMHS.

Chorus - Grades 6-8

Chorus is a year-long course that is open to all students who love to sing. No audition is required.   There is a 6th, 7th and 8th grade chorus.  Students will be exposed to many different types of music, learn to read music, to sight sing, and to sing individually as well as in groups.  The chorus performs two major concerts each year:  Christmas on the Mountain at the Tivoli in December, and a concert in the spring.  Other performances occur throughout the year as opportunities arise.
