HS Clubs
Book Club
Love to read and talk with others about what you read? Join us to discuss a new book each month. The group will decide which books we read this year. Some of last year’s favorites were My Sister’s Keeper, Snowflower and the Secret Fan and Copper Sun.
Book Club is sponsored by Mrs. Cushing and Mrs. Poss and meets first and third Fridays in the Media Center.
Environmental Club
The Environmental Club will focus on helping our school community become green and live green! We will be promoting a green lifestyle as well as being responsible for recycling in the building.
Environmental Club is sponsored by Mrs. Buntain and Mrs. Mulloy and meets the second and fourth Mondays in Mrs. Mulloy’s Room.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes
FCA’s purpose, at its absolute core, is to combine people’s passion for sports with their passion for Christ, and teach them that those two worlds don’t have to be separate. FCA wants to give meaning to the athletic nature that all of us are born with and use it for something that stretches beyond sports.
FCA is sponsored by Coach Moore and meets every Monday in the High School Gym.
Fitness/Nutrition Club
Fitness/Nutrition Club is open to middle and high school students. Students will work on developing individual fitness program for themselves. This program will include both proper nutrition and exercising for fitness. Individual progress will be charted. The club is open to any fitness level.
Fitness/Nutrition Club is sponsored by Mrs. Blackwell and Mrs. Bryant and meets every Monday and Friday in Mrs. Blackwell’s Room.
Fly Tying Club
The Fly Tying Club is for anyone interested in fly fishing and learning to make your own flies (lures). Whether you are an accomplished fisherman or just have a passing interest, you are welcome! We will begin with some basic techniques, then try to tie a new pattern at each meeting, with a variety of patterns designed to attract many different types of fish in different habitats and conditions. Participation is initially limited to ten students, but if interest grows, so may the membership.

Football Club
Watch films, study hall, ACT prep, NCAA Clearinghouse, and College letters. Students may choose which days and how frequently they would like to participate.
Football Club is sponsored by Mr. Hegwood and Coach Price and meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the Coach Price’s Room.
Future Business Leaders of America
FBLA is a nonprofit educational association with a quarter million students preparing for careers in business and business related fields. Membership includes competitive events programs, publications, conferences and seminars along with community and fun-filled activities. FBLA members have the competitive edge. You can compete to design a conference program brochure, T-shirt or pin for the state, or compete in 50 different career related events. Membership is $15.00.
FBLA is sponsored by Mrs. Konwaler and meets the first and third Wednesdays in Mrs. Konwaler’s Room.
Future Teachers of America
The Future Teachers of America Club is for students who are interested in careers in the education field, such as: teacher, coach, pre-school worker, and recreation department worker. Club members will have opportunities to assist teachers at Nolan Elementary School, help with CDC classes, and shadow teachers.
FTA is sponsored by Mrs. Crane and meets the second and fourth Wednesdays in Mrs. Crane’s Room.
International Service and Awareness Club
It’s a small world after all! Students of the International Service and Awareness Club will promote international understanding by building relationships with SMMHS international students and connecting with their communities. The world will be brought right to SMMHS through a variety of activities such as: service projects, personal communications (i.e. e-pal, etc.) and exploration of current global issues. Students will actively research non-profit organizations and will allocate some funds from the “Water for Wotera” project as well as funding from projects planned by the group.
International Service and Awareness Club is sponsored by Mrs. Dunbar, Mrs. Mastin and Mrs. Sharpe and meets the first and third Fridays in Mrs. Mastin’s Room.
Math League Contests
Students compete against students across the nation by taking a 30-minute math exam. The problems are excellent practice for SAT and college bound students. Solutions to the exams will be provided one week after the test date.

Mock Trial
Mock Trial is a national contest, sponsored by the American Bar Association (ABA), which pits teams of students from area schools, who argue a fictitious case supplied by the ABA. Students assume the roles of lawyer and witness in order to argue the case and are judged by local attorneys. Real lawyers serve as coaches for local teams and the competition takes place in an actual courtroom. Local competition is typically held in February, but preparation begins in October/November. Successful teams can compete on the local, state and national level.

Model UN
In Model UN students learn about other countries and important global issues and then put that knowledge to use simulating the United Nations and competing against teams from other schools. At the competition, each student serves as a representative of a country, reads papers he or she has written, and gives speeches trying to convince delegates from other countries to change their minds about the issues at hand.
Model UN is sponsored by Mr. Barlew and meets every Monday and Wednesday in Mr. Barlew’s Room.
Newspaper
Students will gather and validate information, interview students, faculty, and others; make decisions as to what is newsworthy; write and edit articles; and produce online and available-for-print versions of the SMMHS newspaper reporting on activities, events, and people at or related to SMMHS. Flexibility will be provided to accommodate student interests in other-than-newspaper activities.

Peers In Education
P.I.E. Club provides peer interaction involving leisure and academic activities. Students may choose which days and how frequently they would like to participate.

Pep Club
This is a group for anyone who likes to attend games but feels a little left out. This will be a place to cheer on your team by acting like a clown (or just coming up with ideas for other people to act like clowns). We will make signs, noise makers, and other miscellaneous spirit building paraphernalia to use at pep rallies and sporting events. Get your face paint out and get ready!!!!

Relay For Life
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fund raising event. It is a 12-hour overnight event that raises money for cancer research, as well as programs, services and education for cancer patients and their families. The event itself takes place in the spring, but planning and fund raising begins now. Join the SMMHS Relay For Life Team and get involved in this great event! See Officer Hill for more details.

Science Quiz Bowl
Students will meet to practice and study Science Quiz Bowl questions to prepare for competition.
Science Quiz Bowl is sponsored by Mrs. McCormack and meets every Tuesday in the Physics Lab.
Scrapbooking Club
If you want some time and space at school to catch up on your scrapbook join the Scrapbooking Club. Mrs. Cox will provide space, cutting instruments, some punches, markers, stamps, and idea books. You bring a scrapbook, pages to work, your pictures, stickers, and some great ideas and we will have FUN.
Scrapbooking Club is sponsored by Mrs. Cox and meets every Wednesday in the Chemistry Lab.
Service Club
The Service Club, which is affiliated with the Signal Mountain Lions Club, provides service opportunities for all members of the SMMHS community. While the executive committee meets weekly, members will only need to come every other Friday to learn about upcoming service projects and suggest ideas for other work the club can do. Projects ranging from painting houses for widows to moving canned food at the Food Bank occur after school or on weekends.

Technology Student Association
TSA is not a “club”, TSA is an international organization. After school meetings are essential! TSA is limited to 15 students. Membership is $16.00, which covers both State and National dues.
TSA is sponsored by Mr. Seymour and meets every Monday in Mr. Seymour’s Room.
World Language Club
We will explore other cultures through art, food, video, and music. We will meet on campus during club time and may meet off campus to enjoy foods from different countries, watch movies, or take dance lessons. We will work on special projects for i-Fest.
World Language Club is sponsored by Ms. Kuhns and Ms. Widmer and meets the second and fourth Fridays in Ms. Kuhns’ Room.
Choral Ensemble
This is a club for those students who wish to perform a more difficult level of music, have individual and small group vocal coaching and perform extra concerts beyond the regular chorus class. This group will perform many different styles of music including Classical, Broadway, Pop, Jazz. See Mrs. Johnson for an application.

Guys in the Kitchen
Our focus will not just be food preparation, but will include service in some capacity to be determined by members. This club is for men only and the number will be limited. See Mrs. Thomas for an application.

Jazz Band
Jazz Band by audition only.

Take Two SMMHS Film Club
Take Two will focus on technical skills required to produce news and film productions. Those interested will need to commit time for field trips, shoots, and editing. SMMHS 2009-2010 Take Two Goals:
1. Start a viable Film Club
2. Increase the knowledge of members
3. Produce works to be viewed at SMMHS

Honor Council
The Honor Council’s purpose is to uphold the honor and integrity of SMMHS and its students. Our mission will be to foster the SMMHS vision and mission for our school. Honor Council Student Representatives will conference with any students that violate honor policy. Honor Council Student Representatives are nominated by the SMMHS faculty.
Honor Council is sponsored by Mr. Hegwood, Officer Hill and Mrs. P. Lane and meets the first and third Fridays in Mr. Hegwood’s Room.
Student Council
Student Council helps improve communication among faculty, students, and parents and advocates for the interests of the students. A variety of projects will be undertaken this year, including school spirit, fund raising, social, and community service. Our first project will be to get all high school students enrolled as active participants in the PTSA. Student Council Officers and Class Representatives will be elected on September 1st.
